A tool that allows you to input characters from the the language of the game Tunic and create words and phrases from this language easily. Keep track of your translation theories and contexts for the words to help you discover their meanings.

Features:

  • Tunic Character Input
  • Quick-Select Characters
  • Word List with Translation Based Filtering (e.g. search for words relating to the English "item".
  • Quick-Compose Phrases from the Word List.
  • Edit translations of the words when viewing the whole phrase.
  • Provide contextual descriptions for words/phrases.
  • See the phrases containing each word.
  • Fast, effective workflows for inputting
  • NEW: Spoiler Mode. When enabled, adds extended features based on knowledge you acquire later in the game.

DISCLAIMER: I have not played much of the game yet; the state of the tool reflects my knowledge of the game so far and will change as it expands!

How to Use:

  1. Click on the segments in the Characters tab to build a character.
  2. Click Add to Typesetter or double click the character in the existing list to add it to a floating window - keep on adding characters until you have created a word.
  3. Click Send to Word Display - you will be sent to the Words tab.
  4. Enter any context or translation and click Add to Dictionary.
  5. Similarly, you can add words to a phrase as you would characters.
  6. Phrases show a translation text box under each word that will automatically update the word's translation.

There are a number of features I would like to add:

  • Data Analysis - improved linking between phrases, sub-phrases and super-phrases, and tools to count most common characters etc.
  • Full Text Translation - English text directly to Tunic text and vice-versa.
  • Visual Character Recognition - Input of characters is slow and tedious even now - it would be helpful to be able to provide a picture to input characters.
  • Fuzzy Search - Improved search options for the word/phrase searching.
  • Accomodate English and Punctuation - Often English and English punctuation is mixed into Tunic phrases. It would be good
  • UI Polish - improve the style.
  • Performance - the techniques used to render the characters are a little...naive.

Hi, and thank you so much for this amazing tool! I found a bug where suddenly all text renders as boxes, and the textures are broken. Here are some screenshot so you can see what i mean: image.png image.png image.png image.png I tried reinstalling and nothing changed. Could you fix this please?

After quite some experimentation, here’s what i found (Potential spoilers for the game):

  1. The corruption comes from the save files in %APPDATA% and i think just from the worddb.tres. If I remove them (or even just delete the contents of the words array in it’s respective file) everything goes back to normal.

  2. The issue with the pink phrase boxes seems to be the usage of question marks. The pink phrases had the folowing contexts: “pick page?” “Pick key” “Use key?”. When i removed the question marks they went back to normal.

  3. Yep, the issue is non-alphhanumeric characters in the translation or context. Could you take a look at this?

Sorry for the bug and thank you for the thorough investigation! Sounds like it was probably a dumb error on my part - I have a few spare hours so I’ll have a look this evening and see what I can find :)

Hi, unfortunately I couldn’t reproduce either issue. However, I’ve pushed a new update (0.3.0) which fingers crossed addresses both issues anyway. I’ve guessed that they’re either A) the font having issues or B) the extremely terrible way I was rendering the characters causing graphics issues or C) both.

I’ve added a fallback font (which should be used when missing characters are found, which would usually be the cause of squares in text), and it now renders the characters in a much more sensible way (which should hopefully also help with any performance issues). Also, I’ve updated the Godot Engine version for good measure.

Thanks for taking a look at this! I put some time into making an alternative so i’m gonna be using that, since it’s built upon already existing conlanging software and thus has more features and is beter organized. I’m happy others will be able to use your tool better tho!

Loved it. You nailed the ideia I had about this tool in my mind.

I've been experiencing problems with it tho, the program is slowing as I catalog a couple of characters to the point of crashing out constantly. Any tips how do solve it?

I missed this notif and its been a while… sorry about that. If this is somehow still relevant to you, I’ve increased performance somewhat with the latest update. In particular general framerates should be much much better. Searching/filtering characters still takes too long when you have a very large amount of characters but hopefully it’s manageable now.

Theoretically the program should also use less memory now which I suspect would be the cause of your crashes.

This was one of those moments where I started to come up with my own solution for a project and thought, "I should google it first."
Lo and behold, this is here and it's far better than anything I could have done. Massive, massive props MothMakes.

Amazing tool, it's very useful to have a way to catalogue my notes! However whenever I make a new phrase, it seems to remove the context and meaning I have stored for any words the phrase uses. Is there a fix for this?

Hi there! Thanks for using this and for the kind words ^_^! Sorry for the bug - should be fixed with the latest version: https://mothmakes.itch.io/tunic-language-logger/devlog/769784/v011-patch-notes
